28 June 2022 Water Use Accountability – Water is Life

Flowers, plants, trees and gardens require a lot of water, like us, to stay alive.

Hello to you today. How are you? I’m tired. Didn’t have a very restful sleep last night. I know I’m not alone about that! I’ve had water on my mind a lot more than usual lately. The headlines coming in around the globe about our freshwater drinking supplies is grim. I have been looking at my own life and personal habits with regards to water usage…..on my walks watching water running from sprinklers, down the street and into the drains. Stand by the canals we have here and watching how many lives other than humans depend on a narrow strip of flowing water. I grew up in a time when we drank water directly from the tap. Now I go to our local grocery store and sometimes the shelves are pretty bare of bottled drinking water….so I end up buying Gatorade or flavored water that really isn’t good for me and my wanting to lose weight.

This morning after watching John Oliver’s piece on water, I found an article that I had been looking for. It talks about how much of our water resources is going towards things we buy like smartphones for example. We are coming to a wake up call, collectively, many will deny needs to happen. Much of what drives the livelihoods of many businesses and workers is the buying and selling of goods, services and luxuries for entertainment like water parks for example. People, myself included, have lived with the now romantic notion of the seeming plentiful nature of water on this earth. We, those paying attention, are seeing harsh realities. Trees, that contribute to our shared oxygen supply, need water. The womb, where a baby takes the 9 month journey in humans is in water. Water is life….quite literally so. No water….no babies.

Hidden water is an important part of water use. It may not be visible, but millions of gallons of virtual water go into making the consumer goods Americans buy, use and throw away. Manufacturing everyday materials like paper, plastic, metal and fabric takes water – a lot of it. Knowing how much water it takes to make the raw materials and products we all use and consume is an important first step towards water conservation and using water more productively.

Hidden Water: How the Water Footprints of Consumer Goods are Calculated

Hidden water is water that is not felt or seen and it is required for almost every step in the production processes for many raw materials and finished products. The water footprint of a product is calculated by adding up all of the water required for each step of the production process. Table 1 lists a sampling of water footprints for the manufacturing of some common consumer goods.

Table 1. Water Footprint of Common Consumer Items.

ItemWater FootprintCar13,737–21,926 gallons (52,000–83,000 liters)Leather Shoes2,113 gallons  (8,000 liters)Smart phone (mobile)3,190 gallons  (12,760 liters)Jeans (cotton)2,866 gallons  (10,850 liters)Bed Sheet (cotton)2,576 gallons  (9,750 liters)T-shirt (cotton)659 gallons  (2,720 liters)Paper (1 piece; A4)1.3 gallons  (5.1 liters)SOURCES: Berger et al; Water Footprint Network, “Water footprints of nations”Friends of the Earth/Trucost; WFN, “The water footprint of cotton consumption” ; WFN, “The water footprint of wood for lumber, pulp, paper, fuel and firewood”

The Water Footprint Network (whose research provides some of the data used in the WFC) defines these components as:

Blue Water Footprint: The amount of surface water and groundwater required (evaporated or used directly) to produce an item.

Green Water Footprint: The amount of rainwater required (evaporated or used directly) to make an item.

Grey Water Footprint: The amount of freshwater required to dilute the wastewater generated in manufacturing, in order to maintain water quality, as determined by state and local standards.

How Much Virtual Water is in a Smart Phone?

Take smart phones, for example. Their water footprint comes from the virtual water associated with their manufacturing – what’s known as the “grey water footprint.”

Phones are composed of many pieces created in multiple steps, and each step consumes water. Numerous resources, materials and parts go into smartphone manufacturing, including rare earth metals (e.g., lithium), tin, glass and plastics. The supply chains for these materials stretch around the world to places like Indonesia, the Philippines and China. Production might include steps like mining for precious metals, creating synthetic chemicals for glue and plastic and assembling and packaging. Collectively, the water associated with each step adds up to the blue water footprint.

In addition, manufacturing the parts creates wastewater that is released into surrounding waterways. Those waterways often have pollution limits that manufacturers must meet before they can send their wastewater down the pipe and into the waterway. The water used to clean and dilute the wastewater adds up to the grey water footprint, and in the case of the smart phone, makes up the largest portion of its total water footprint.

When the water required for all the steps to make a smart phone is added up, the water footprint of the production of a single phone is an estimated 3,190 gallons.

The Water Footprint of Everyday Paper, Plastic and Cotton

Similarly, water is consumed in manufacturing most other products. For example, it takes 22 gallons of water to make one pound of plastic. In fact, it takes at least twice as much water to produce a plastic water bottle as the amount of water contained in the bottle. The water footprint of one pound of cotton is 1,320 gallons. That equals over 650 gallons of water for one new cotton t-shirt. Even refining gasoline takes water – approximately one to 2.5 gallons of water to refine one gallon of gasoline.

To meet all of these needs, industrial facilities in the US withdraw over 15.9 billion gallons of water per day. Fortunately, due to increasingly efficient manufacturing practices, most factories have reduced water use by 12 percent since 2005, and 33 percent since 1970.

All told, the water that keeps America afloat on a sea of consumer goods is enormous. As some of the biggest shoppers on the planet, the average American’s water footprint for buying, using and throwing away consumer goods (excluding food) is 583 gallons of water per day.

Save Water With the Three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The adage “reduce, reuse, recycle” becomes even more relevant given all the water and other resources that go into making all the products consumed in America. Many consumer goods are made to be thrown away, so they pile up in landfills, wash into the ocean or litter the landscape.

Buying fewer products in the first place reduces the overall number of products that are made, and, in turn, reduces the amount of water needed by the factories that make these products. Additionally, recycling consumer goods can have a positive effect. In 2012, for example, the US threw out over 24 million tons of paper and almost 29 million tons of plastic – both of which are water-intensive materials that can be re-used and/or recycled. Recycling a pound of paper – the same amount found in a typical daily newspaper – saves 3.5 gallons of water.

Small actions like recycling at home, reusing items when possible and using fewer plastic bags and paper towels can make a small but cumulative difference in water consumption. Reducing the need for new products in the first place – ending overconsumption – is the strategy that saves the most water. Avoiding purchases of disposable, low-quality goods that are made to go in the trash makes a big difference. Buying used items and thrifting – especially for clothing – or buying products that are of higher quality, reusable and, if need be, recyclable, are the best options when new purchases are necessary.

The Hidden Water in Energy

The average American today uses about five times more electricity than they did 50 years ago. This increase is significant because it takes a substantial amount of water to create energy. Water is used to cool steam electric power plants – fueled by coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear power – and is required to generate hydropower. Water is also used in great quantities during fuel extraction, refining and production. So, wasted energy is, in effect, wasted water.

Nobody will have a water footprint of zero because it takes water to make just about everything we choose to buy, eat, use and throw away. Individual daily decisions might seem small, but cumulatively they can have a great impact.

In the Ghetto

Song by Elvis Presley

OverviewLyricsListenVideosArtistsAnalysisComposers

As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin’
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto
(In the ghetto)

And his mama cries
‘Cause if there’s one thing that she don’t need
It is another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto
(In the ghetto)

People, don’t you understand
The child needs a helping hand
Or he’ll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me
Are we too blind to see?
Do we simply turn our heads
And look the other way

Well, the world turns
And a hungry little boy with a runny nose
Plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto
(In the ghetto)

And his hunger burns
So he starts to roam the streets at night
And he learns how to steal
And he learns how to fight
In the ghetto
(In the ghetto)

Then one night in desperation
The young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car
Tries to run, but he don’t get far
And his mama cries

As a crowd gathers ’round an angry young man
Face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto
(In the ghetto)

And as her young man dies
(In the ghetto)
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin’
Another little baby child is born
In the ghetto
(In the ghetto)

And his mama cries
(In the ghetto)
(In the ghetto)
(Ah)

27 June 2022 Putting your money where your mouth (and heart is)

More and more science proves something extraordinary happened for us to have this today. They can’t replicate what it took to make this dimensional image appear on cloth

Hello to you. How are you? Lots going on everywhere these days. Lots of people expressing themselves, myself included, in a lot of words and feelings but little actual action. My Grandpa Becker was a man of God when he was here serving as a pastor and actively worked, along with my Grandma for civil rights….human rights. This morning I am remembering a little thing he used to say to me all the time, “put your money where your mouth is.” There are many who want to save unborn babies but when it comes to being willing to help take care of the children and adults they eventually become they aren’t as concerned. ALOT of charities all over the world trying to do things – lots of money changing hands and yet conditions are still horrible for many of our worlds people. I would like to see more collaboration of efforts – trying to decide which charity, how many charities is overwhelming. What I see coming for the United States, if states actually are serious about caring for life…quality of life in all aspects….there going to have to raise taxes. The money to raise the children you are demanding to be brought here has to come from somewhere. Are you prepared for what more life means? More mouths to feed, educate, clothe, shelter, provide proper healthcare, trash, clean drinkable water, food resources, safety, infrastructure like roads and energy suppliers, clean air….are you prepared to pay? Nothing is free. Nothing ultimately “cheap.” Look back and how well have we done so far? Are you ALL prepared? You want to protect life – prove it by your actions not just rhetoric and empty promises.

You can do your own research but what I see is fragmentation of a world with the same issues. A lot of redundancy in effort…finances going on. More “life”…more responsibility. We have the same basic needs the world over. For example water and food. Gotta have water to get the food. So many separate agencies trying to do the same missions – some trustworthy and some not making it a risky thing sometimes to try and donate money to help.

23 June 2022 You are not garbage

How hope looks to many in our world. They can see it but can’t reach it… they are obstructed.

Hello to you today. How are you? I am tired but got some sleep. A lot has been on my mind lately. A lot of it comes with echoes of a question my ex-husband used to ask me…”Jackie can you do anything about it? Are you going to do anything about it? If the answer is no, quit worrying about it or decide to do something. “ My therapist said something to me yesterday about how bad things are always happening in the world, do we always need the details when knowing them can potentially negatively affect our mental health? I’m sensitive, I care and negative information, when over-indulged, is not good for me. Lots of tears, songs and prayers yesterday for the people of this world who are suffering.

A place that really was a point of my focus besides Afghanistan was Guatemala and what is happening there that Boyan Slat and his Ocean Cleanup team are trying to tackle….tsunamis of plastic waste.

https://youtu.be/4rVTWsQ23Pk – Interceptor Trashfence stops plastic tsunami in the worlds most polluting river (Ocean Cleanup)

https://youtu.be/4SVpzuoEpvc – Such a shame

Seeing this reminded me of my own experiences with garbage clean up. Going to places to fish and spending most of my time picking up carelessly discarded trash and fishing line tangled up in the shoreline. Everywhere I have lived and gone to nature places – trash left behind either accidentally or mostly intentionally. An apartment complex I lived in, which became section 8 or low income housing, was always littered with trash. One day my ex and I filled up two shopping carts full of it and left it at the complex office door….they were not pleased!

Who is teaching that it’s ok to just discard garbage wherever you feel like? When you really stop and have a heart of Christ, you begin to see things differently. A lot of people in our world are considered disposable, expendable….replaceable…..something to use and throw away when they are no longer “useful” and their original purpose no longer possible. The people of many countries, like Guatemala, are treated like how garbage is treated and so , in turn, that’s how they treat themselves, others of all forms of life and this earth:

“Corruption, inequality, and high levels of
violence and insecurity in Guatemala
contribute to high levels of poverty, elevated
crime rates, and some of the lowest social
development indicators in Latin America.”

May be for a little while until reality sets in.

Yesterday I got to thinking about foreign aide going to these countries…..what are they doing with the money and is there any sort of accountability? Does organizations like the United Nations hold the leadership of these countries accountable for what is happening to their people and the environment? Actually know what is being done with billions of dollars each year? Is it all just a pay off? Hush money? Lip service? Financial aid, not properly managed, does not help the poor. These people are feeling powerless and overwhelmed….so they run. People in our country do the same thing. It’s important to remember that who they are, who we are is inescapable. There is only one escape from self and that is death. There must be learning beyond books, figures and tables and empowerment…the teaching of self love and worth that once learned, transcends beyond an individual to the world.

What does it mean to give a hand up not a hand out?
The idea is to not leave people struggling with their problems by just giving them some food, which only helps them until the next time someone gives them food, but to help them get through their problems so
they can eventually get their own food.

I don’t agree with what the person who made this video did but it illustrates at a much smaller level what happens when a home is attacked….with fire ants they attack anything perceived as a threat. People have fight or flight….a lot of flight as evidenced by United States borders. I think many would love to be able to go home again but just can’t for so many reasons. A temporary safe haven goes from days to years…waiting for peace to come. Our country does not have all the resources to take in the rest of the world long term:

I revisited this nice idea put together by the United Nations. It’s pretty evident by world events that many leaders have either forgotten it exists or deny it’s existence and validity:

https://www.un.org/en/about-us/universal-declaration-of-human-rights

Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 (General Assembly resolution 217 A) as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations. It sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected and it has been translated into over 500 languages. The UDHR is widely recognized as having inspired, and paved the way for, the adoption of more than seventy human rights treaties, applied today on a permanent basis at global and regional levels (all containing references to it in their preambles).

Preamble

Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,

Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,

Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,

Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations,

Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms,

Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge,

Now, therefore,

The General Assembly,

Proclaims this Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.

22 June 2022 Who Is My Neighbor?

Hello to you. How are you today? I am doing well these days and almost feel guilty about that! Such is the power of loving God. I was really a broken mess and once I made up my mind to love Jesus in particular my whole life has turned around. Just be willing. Once you say “yes” you can’t say “no” – like making an unbreakable promise.

This morning I found out the people of Afghanistan have suffered a major catastrophe….in their sleep nonetheless. When I think of what Jesus said about loving our neighbors, I am thinking of them today. They are neighbors.

Matthew 22:37-39
New International
Version
37 Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with
all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind! lal(A) 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself! bI(B)

When I think of neighbors I think of all the living beings that play a part in making sure things happen on this earth. So often I hear people refer to beings other than human with the prefaced word, “just.” They see another living being and think of it as part of the scenery. Squirrels for example. They are the earths arborists. They help plant trees that make oxygen we can breathe….not “just a squirrel” to me.

Not “just a spider….just a pest.”

As part of my healing process God has lead me back to all kinds of sound and music. Turns out different frequencies of sound can help with healing and the energy flow in our bodies. I have found several YouTube videos that I feel have been very helpful:

I was exploring things yesterday and remembering a blue radio I had for many years. I can remember being in my bedroom turning the dial and finding David Bowie through the BBC! Traveling all the way from Sioux Falls South Dakota to London with just the turn of a radio dial! A lot of existence is about tuning in or tuning out various frequencies:

What is resonance in electrical system?
Resonance in electrical circuits. The resonance can also be defined as the state of the circuit in which the receiver reactance or susceptance are equal to zero. If the receiver has a combination of R, C, L, and
is a true condition X = 0, there. is a serial resonance, also known as a voltage resonance.

What are examples of electrical resonance?
Turning a radio is the best example of electrical resonance. When we turn the knob of a radio, to tune a station, we are changing the natural frequency of the
electrical circuit of the receiver, to make it equal to the transmission frequency of the radio station.

People also ask
What does listening to Hz frequencies do?
Binaural beats in the alpha frequencies (8 to 13 Hz) are
thought to encourage relaxation, promote
positivity, and decrease anxiety. Binaural beats in the lower beta frequencies (14 to 30 Hz) have been linked to increased concentration and alertness, problem solving, and improved memory.

How do healing frequencies work?
Theories suggest that stressed out or diseased cells change frequencies, and develop discordant vibrations from the rest of the body. Sound healing may help cells operate in harmony once again. Sound
healing may consist of deep and resonant sounds or discordant buzzing that some may find more noisy than musical. Sep 23, 2021

21 June 2022 Job 38

The petals of the peony give way to reveal a star

Hello to you. How are you today? The past couple days I’ve noticed some disturbing headlines but something that I haven’t really seen much concern about is the drought in the Horn of Africa. There has been talk about drought all over the United States…or flooding. What are we doing with the fresh water resources when they do come? When floods come are we prepared to collect it?

The March-May 2022 rainy season is
likely the driest on record. At least 18.4
million people are already waking each day
to high levels of acute food insecurity and
rising malnutrition across Ethiopia, Kenya
and Somalia, and this figure could increase
to 20 million by September. Jun 10, 2022

How many products are currently being made that use water – are they wants or needs? California is in a horrible drought but still allows swimming pools. Doesn’t make any sense to me. People all over the world needing fresh water, to include ourselves, and we play in it.

For the past couple of days I have been reading and re-reading a powerful exchange in the Bible between God and man. Job 38 The Lord Speaks. I think about so much going on in our world where it seems like everybody either wants to usurp God, deny God, or be a God in the absence of a tangible presence. All that’s missing is Golden Calves and I think there are many of those around. I know I don’t have all the answers but I do know who does. We will rise and fall for many generations but in the midst of all those “changes” an unchanging, merciful God remains to stand the tests of eternity:

The animated film I am sharing is a synopsis of much going on in this world – showing what has been done for profit and the consequences:

The children committing crimes of today were made. I saw a report of a 21 and 24 year old stealing and selling gas. Why did they think this was a good idea? Because people bought it from them! From inside the womb experience to their setting foot on the earth to the life they were told they would and should have. A lot of unmet expectations. Unmet expectations and empty promises manifest a seed of resentment. There is plenty of food for a seed of resentment to bloom. Keeping promises, unconditional love and acceptance, mercy, generosity of time, proper and meaningful education can turn a thistle into a rose. Don’t hate what you make when it comes to children – God doesn’t. Children are newborns to over 100 years old and some have fur, feathers and scales. Stop teaching hate.

20 June 2022 Little Pieces

Hello to you. How are you today? This morning I woke up with a song we sang yesterday in my head, “this is my story, this is my song….praising my savior all the day long.” I found these songs with very similar lyrics and messages:

Being grateful about this made me wonder about something else that I do everyday and am grateful for….something simple like brushing my teeth which is connected to Indoor plumbing. Having a tap to turn on and water flows is really pretty awesome. I got to wondering how Jesus and the people of his time brushed their teeth and I couldn’t really find an answer I was looking for until I saw information about the “toothbrush tree.” It makes sense to me that people would chew on something to release flavors and cleaning elements like we do now with chewing gum:

Salvadora persica or the toothbrush tree is a small evergreen tree native to India, the Middle East and Africa. Its sticks are traditionally used as a natural toothbrush called miswak and are mentioned by the World Health Organization for oral hygiene use. Other names include arak, jhak, pīlu, and mustard tree.Wikipedia

Species: S. persica

Kingdom: Plantae

Family: Salvadoraceae

Genus: Salvadora

Order: Brassicales

Location

Salvadora persica is native to the Arabian Peninsula, Africa, western Asia, the Middle East, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Although it is drought tolerant, toothbrush tree is often found where there is some ground water. It is also salt tolerant, growing along coasts or on saline soils.

Yesterday I listened to a lot of music and was so happy to come across another collaboration of countries praising God together to include Russia and the Ukraine!

Yesterday I also revisited a topic that gets me pretty fired up and that’s robotics and AI. All these people, many with good intentions and motives. I understand the kind made to be “tools” but there are many being made to be more than that. When you play God you better have all the pieces. What I am observing appears incomplete. These “tools” are made in our image and just like a gun, once it’s out of the manufacturers hands that “tool” can become a weapon. Science fiction becomes science fact – our current world is evidence of dreams….energy molded and shaped into countless realities. It took our creator a long time with many trials and failures to create us and all the other life forms we share earth with. There are basement scientists creating life like robots to be companions. Haven’t any of them seen Blade Runner, AI, Terminator. Ghost in the Shell. Westworld and Humans for just a few examples….Data from Star Trek?!

She kills the client and on her way out she says something very prophetic:” they do to us what they want to do to you!”

I found this and it is kind of scary to read. It’s scary to think the field of robotics is relying on Asimov’s codes as their guide. It’s scary to think of people making something they consider only to be a tool in the form of human beings. Many flesh and blood human beings are denied basic rights and revolt against the systems denying them those rights. How will it be when a sentient machine retaliates? To error is a human condition! How quickly do machines recover from erroneous coding once it’s let loose?! There are so many little pieces to code – look how long it has taken for us to figure out DNA and as we know, there can be errors within even it! Why is their not a global regulation of this field and their “tools?”

A code of ethics for robotics engineers

https://www.automate.org/blogs/robot-ethics-where-values-and-engineering-meet – excerpt use the link to read the whole article

First Law
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

Second Law
A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

Third Law
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

–Isaac Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics

****

Robot ethics is a relatively new subdomain of robotics focused on ethical aspects of automation design and deployment.

While its origin can arguably be traced back to Isaac Asimov’s speculative Three Laws of Robotics (above), first published in the 1942 short story ‘Runaround,’ it is only over the past twenty years –spurred by the work of academic researchers, and later by trade organizations and standardization bodies—that the field has evolved to become an important part of the robotics conversation.

For example, The European Union funded RoboLaw project drew on contributions from experts in robot ethics in its development of extensive guidelines for European policymakers and lawmakers governing automation and AI deployments. Meanwhile, the IEEEis working on standards designed to ensure that automation and AI conforms with the principles of ethically-guided design and technology functions for the betterment of society.

Robot ethics combines insights from experts in robotics, AI, computer science, and engineering with insights from experts in philosophy, law, psychology and sociology, in an attempt to ensure that automation designs and deployments do not create ethical hazards for individuals and society. For example, considering the growing impact of industrial automation on society, robot ethics experts ask questions such as ‘Should industrial robots be taxed?’ ‘Does the rise of automation change the debate around proposals for a Universal Basic Income?’ and ‘How can we ensure that automation is designed and deployed with ethical considerations in mind?’

The domain of industrial robots is also included in the growing conversation around robot ethics. The rise of collaborative robots, which enable closer interaction between humans and robots than ever before on factory and warehouse floors, has given extra impetus to the topic.

NOTE: Safety has always been a core principle of industrial robot design, and industrial robots must comply with global and regional standards and laws governing safe design and deployment. Robot ethics builds on this established knowledge to explore the broader ethical considerations involved, such as worker well-being.

19 June 2022 Who Is Jesus To You?

Hello to you! For the men folk I wish you a Happy Father’s Day! I hope you are able to spend quality time with those you love and care about! What brings you the kind of feelings that fill you up inside? Is there a song that brings forth happy memories and a smile to your face…..gets you to hum a few bars? Today is a day of gratitude for fathers of earth and heaven. Today, as part of the series at our church Can I Ask You A Question, the question was “Who is Jesus to you?”

Study guide from todays service at Grace Middleton Bible Church. In honor of the dads there was a wall of donuts! Hearing messages like we did today is better than any donut…food you can chew and swallow. It is a energy, food for the entire body, mind and soul. Spirit food! Living water.

John 9:39 – 39 Jesus said,[a] “For judgment(AL) I have come into this world,(AM) so that the blind will see(AN)and those who see will become blind.”(AO)

If you have ever watched what happens with a stream you can see tangible living water. So many little pieces of life headed somewhere.

John 4:14

Version
14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. (A) Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water(B) welling up to eternal life.” (C)

This is a good song for today I think. Sometimes it’s hard to be yourself for a billion different reasons:

18 June 2022 Anywhere

Hello to you. How are you today? I hope wherever you are that you are doing well today or on a road to wellness and recovery in mind, body and soul. I hope you have all the resources you need for all the ways you are trying to make yourself the best person you can be and this world a better place for your being in it.

Ever since the first time I saw The Chosen episode with the Samaritan woman at the well, there was a part that made me curious. It was at the end of Jesus’s exchange with the woman and the disciples offer Jesus food and he refuses saying he has a food they don’t know about. I wondered what was this food?!

When you stop to think about it, the last time you were in the flow….truly happy doing something were you hungry? Thirsty? Tired? Or did you feel “full?” All the empty spaces within you filled up. Happiness is an energy….like a food. For me a energy food that goes beyond just happiness is hearing and singing beautiful songs and going on walks to interact with the other beings I share this life with. There is an energy exchange when you stop to appreciate a rose and smile! Not all food is food you chew and swallow. I am wondering if this is what Jesus meant. Matters of the Spirit create energies that feed a soul…fill us up and quench our thirst when we are in the midst of the experience. That spiritual experience doesn’t have to be in a temple…it can be anywhere….the Spirit, to me, is the very air that gives us life:

https://youtu.be/ordhsDeAt60 – Jesus and the outcast woman at the well

John 4:27-32
New International
Version
The Disciples Rejoin Jesus
27 Just then his disciples returned(A) and were
surprised to find him talking with a woman. But
no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are
you talking with her?”
28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went
back to the town and said to the people,
29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I
ever did. B) Could this be the Messiah?”(C)
30 They came out of the town and made their
way toward him.
31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, 0)
eat something.”
32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat(E) that
you know nothing about.”

Yesterday I was thinking about something called a path to success. It is a path I imagine for the children. There is a time when we know why we are here and have great enthusiasm to do it but then comes the world, for many, with obstacles. So many dreams crushed by negative money, greed and power structures we’ve built for ourselves. I was imagining a generation of children being encouraged, doors opened and opportunities presented for them to have a path to success from their very beginning. Imagine a world of people doing what they have been sent here to do? Imagine all the “ happy” energy….food for the entire body these children would have to eat? I truly believe God didn’t send us here to spend all of our days in misery.

I encourage you to learn to see yourself, others and the beings we share life with using the eyes of our hearts.

17 June 2022 Agreements

Hello to you today. How are you? I’m doing ok. A little sad and disappointed after glancing at the headlines. It seems like it’s so much easier to look outwards for solutions to what ails us. So many really smart people engaged in petty energy exchanges from local things to the world stage. Oh to harness all that energy and ambition to looking within and attempting to find common ground, meaningful and sustainable solutions. All these brain trusts of people and we are still barely beyond being a primitive civilization.

Something we can all agree on is we need energy for our homes, schools, businesses and transportation and the current status quo is not sustainable and doing irreparable damage to our shared home:

Yesterday, on a spiritual level I experienced what it’s like when many countries can agree on something. In this case it was a song and a powerful being who I feel would love it if we did more collaborations and cooperations in all these small and large issues facing all of us:

https://youtu.be/JM5MDFgPnBU – 50 Countries sing Amazing Grace

And this song brought me to tears last night remembering one of our countries treasures and the man who wrote the song Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails:

lyrics that speak to the pain we all experience in one way or another…..turn it out……turn it in….. another thing we have in common is there is no escaping ourselves. For me the only peace comes from God and our relationship together.

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that’s real

The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end

And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar’s chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair

Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I’m still right here

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end

And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

16 June 2022 First Song

My Uncle was watering his garden yesterday and was making rainbows in the process! A song of color for the eyes and reminder of good will.

Hello to you today. Hope this finds you well! Yesterday Link and I had a wonderful visit with my Aunt and Uncle. We had her wonderful meatloaf, mashed potatoes and broccoli – yum! We talked about a lot of things to include music. It was so fun to see the two of them dancing in their seats to Chuck Berry’s song Johnny B. Good and sing parts of My Girl by the Temptations with my Aunt. We weren’t really agreeing about fossil fuel as an energy source but did agree every takes energy. It takes energy to GET energy! Our current main fuel source took a long time for the earth to create and once it’s gone it’s gone. With our climate change issues becoming more pressing change has to come. We can’t leave the kids with this mess to figure out – (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greta_Thunberg)

When I got home music was on my mind and in particular the String Theory. Where my mind went was thinking of what was the first song to be played on a string instrument:

The earliest surviving stringed
instruments to date are the
Lyres of Ur, plucked
chordophones, which
currently exist in fragments
that date back to 4,500 years ago. The first
bowed chordophones were probably
developed in central Asia and were the
forerunners of an Indian folk instrument
known as the ravanastron. Oct 8, 2021

Then of course I checked my other favorite playground besides Google, Youtube, and found this interpretation of the first known melody played on a Lyre:

https://youtu.be/QpxN2VXPMLc – The Oldest Known Melody Hurrian Hymn No 6 c. 1400 B.C

As I listened to this I started thinking about what it must be like for God and the earth to experience such a thing. There were bone flutes that have been found but they aren’t the same as hearing vibrating strings making harmonies of sound. If you really use your imagination the first true song or melody was probably made made by the vocal chords of someone singing or humming:

https://youtu.be/Tsh-0VvAGQA – Throat Endoscopy Exam While Singing

I wondered, as I couldn’t recall, if there was any record of Jesus singing and turns out he and his apostles sang a Hymn at the Last Supper:

Mark 14:22-26
New International
Version
22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread,
and when he had given thanks, he broke it’A)
and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this
is my body.”
23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given
thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank
from it. (B)
24 “This is my blood of thelal covenant, IC) which
is poured out for many,” he said to them.
25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the
fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new
in the kingdom of God.”(D)
26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out
to the Mount of Olives.(E)

Well naturally I was curious as to what Hymn they sang together – they don’t really know for sure beyond tradition of Passover:

While Scripture doesn’t explicitly state
which hymn was sang, Jewish tradition
reveals that the Passover meal was
concluded by singing the last portion of the
Hallel. The Hallel is comprised of Psalms 113
through 118. It is a joyous celebration of
praise and thanksgiving to God. Apr 9, 2020

The Psalm Sang at the Last Supper

I looked a little deeper and found out about the Hebrew Passover song Dayenu:

Dayenu (Hebrew:דַּיֵּנוּ‎) is a song that is part of the Jewish holiday of Passover. The word “dayenu” means approximately “it would have been enough”, “it would have been sufficient”, or “it would have sufficed” (dayin Hebrew is “enough”, and -enu the first person plural suffix, “to us”). This traditional up-beat Passover song is over one thousand years old. The earliest full text of the song occurs in the first medieval haggadah, which is part of the ninth-century Seder Rav Amram.[1] The song is about being grateful to God for all of the gifts he gave the Jewish people, such as taking them out of slavery, giving them the Torah and Shabbat, and had God only given one of the gifts, it would have still been enough. This is to show much greater appreciation for all of them as a whole. The song appears in the haggadah after the telling of the story of the exodus and just before the explanation of Passover, matzah, and the maror.

https://youtu.be/omvnuuppOlg – Dayenu Passover song

Many years ago, at a church I was attending in Florida, they did something really special by inviting the local Jewish community to share the experience of a Passover Meal with us. The path my explorations have taken me reminded me of that experience. Music is so good at being a book marker in my brain for memories. Little snippets of time, moments wrapped up in melody.
