15 Dec 2017 Dreams, A Need Versus A Want, The Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9New International Version (NIV) and Emotional Intelligence (Dalai Lama)

11 Dec 2017 – Everything has become a need versus what most things are a want. We need food and water for example – squirrel. (After I wrote this our neighborhood squirrel came and got a drink of water from the bowl I try to keep full for them).

Hello to you.  I wasn’t sure I was going to post anything after the FCC net neutrality repeal yesterday (https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/fcc-reverses-landmark-rules-aimed-at-free-and-open-internet/ar-BBGJMoz?OCID=ansmsnnews11).  I prayed and meditated about it like I always do when it comes to things of this nature and now we wait.  Kyle and I had some pretty choice words about this yesterday but I am not going to dwell on it.  It’s like drinking poison and expecting a cure.

Last night’s dreams were interesting.  The two I remember kind of go together.  The first one was of watching a plane almost crash over the house and then going from that and watching the plane go into the ocean and become self automated like AI (a mech or robot) but no passengers.  It was looking at me but had empty chairs behind glass for eyes.  The other dream was about watching a bunch of Asian people sitting around a white table with boxes beside them like microphones to amplify their voices.  They were playing some sort of word game.

A topic that has come up many times for me through the years as I’ve tried to navigate my way through living in this world has been knowing the difference between a want and a need.  It seems to me that in our world we have lost the ability to discern the difference.  For example we need food and water.  Most everything else above and beyond what it takes for us to survive is a want.  What drives wants and all the labels that come with those wants (infidelity and many other life traps)?  The human propensity for boredom.  The color green goes from green to teal, to olive, to sea foam green.  The gratitude that comes from just having a car to drive goes to I want one with these features, this color, these rims on the tires.  I want to be special.  I want to be unique.  I want to be different from everyone else.  I want people to notice me.  The irony in all this is the mess we’ve created our of ourselves and this planet in our quest for alleviation of boredom and individuality.

Is what you are about to buy or what you are about to do going to bring you lasting fulfillment, joy, happiness, make your life better or is it just a an attempt to put a mask on something else?  There is no person, place or thing that can fill the void of spirit within all of us – the place that animates us in this existence.    It is important to learn what you need to live a fulfilling life and let go of what you don’t.  Learn the difference, for yourself, what you need and what it is you simply  a want and ask yourself why you want it.

This came to my mind this morning.  There is a lot about the internet that is good.  My being able to be here doing this right now is pretty amazing.  There is a lot about the internet that has become very destructive.  A child being able to broadcast their suicide livestream on Facebook for example is not a good thing (https://nypost.com/2017/01/25/teen-broadcasts-her-suicide-on-facebook-live/).

The word Babble and it’s definition is how the Internet seems to be to me most times.  A bunch of people talking, screaming and yelling to be heard but who is actually listening?  Go back to the dreams I shared with you.  What if this chaos we’ve created in a “box”  was unleashed into an AI form.  Something to think about.

Genesis 11:1-9New International Version (NIV)

The Tower of Babel

11 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. As people moved eastward,[a] they found a plain in Shinar[b] and settled there.

They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”

So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel[c]—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

Footnotes:

  1. Genesis 11:2 Or from the east; or in the east
  2. Genesis 11:2 That is, Babylonia
  3. Genesis 11:9 That is, Babylon; Babel sounds like the Hebrew for confused.

What the Dalai Lama Taught Daniel Goleman About Emotional Intelligence

May 04, 2015
MAY15_04_dalai_lama

Two decades before Daniel Goleman first wrote about emotional intelligence in the pages of HBR, he met his holiness the 14th Dalai Lama at Amherst College, who mentioned to the young science journalist for the New York Times that he was interested in meeting with scientists. Thus began a long, rich friendship as Goleman became involved over the years in arranging a series of what he calls “extended dialogues” between the Buddhist spiritual leader and researchers in fields ranging from ecology to neuroscience. Over the next 30 years, as Goleman has pursued his own work as a psychologist and business thinker, he has come to see the Dalai Lama as a highly uncommon leader. And so he was understandably delighted when, on the occasion of his friend’s 80th birthday, he was asked to write a book describing the Dalai Lama’s compassionate approach to addressing the world’s most intractable problems. Due out in June, Force for Good, which draws both on Goleman’s background in cognitive science and his long relationship with the Dalai Lama, is both an exploration of the science and the power of compassion and a call to action.  Curious about the book and about how the Dalai Lama’s views on compassion informed Goleman’s thinking on emotional intelligence, I caught up with Goleman over the phone. What follows are edited excerpts from our conversation.

HBR. Let’s start with some definitions here. What is compassion, as you are describing it? It sounds a lot like empathy, one of the major components of emotional intelligence. Is there a difference?

Goleman: Yes, an important difference. As I’ve written about recently in HBR, three kinds of empathy are important to emotional intelligence: cognitive empathy – the ability to understand another person’s point of view; emotional empathy – the ability to feel what someone else feels; and empathic concern – the ability to sense what another person needs from you.  Cultivating all three kinds of empathy, which originate in different parts of the brain, is important for building social relationships.

But compassion takes empathy a step further. When you feel compassion, you feel distress when you witness someone else in distress — and because of that you want to help that person.

Why draw this distinction?

Simply put, compassion makes the difference between understanding and caring. It’s the kind of love that a parent has for a child. Cultivating it more broadly means extending that to the other people in our lives and to people we encounter.

I think that in the workplace, that attitude has a hugely positive effect, whether it’s in how we relate to our peers or how we are as a leader, or how we relate to clients and customers. A positive disposition toward another person creates the kind of resonance that builds trust and loyalty and makes interactions harmonious. And the opposite of that — when you do nothing to show that you care — creates distrust, disharmony, and causes huge dysfunction at home and in business.

When you put it that way, it’s hard to disagree that if you treat people well things would go better than if don’t or that if you cared about them they would care a lot more about you. So why do you think that just doesn’t happen naturally? Is this a cultural thing? Or a misplaced confusion about when competition is appropriate?

I think too often there’s a muddle in people’s thinking that if I’m nice to another person or if I have their interests at heart it means that I don’t have my own interests at heart. The pathology of that is, “Well, I’ll just care about me and not the other person.” And that, of course, is the kind of attitude that leads to lots of problems in the business realm and in the personal realm. But compassion also includes yourself. If we see that if we protect ourselves and make sure we’re okay — and also be sure the other person is okay — that creates a different framework for working with other people and for cooperating with other people.

Could you give me an example of how that might work in the business world?

There’s research that was done on star salespeople and on client managers, which found that the lowest level of performance was a kind of “I’m going to get the best deal I can now, and I don’t care how this affects the other person” attitude, which means that you might make the sale but that you lose the relationship.  But at the top end, the stars were typified by the attitude, “I am working for the client as well as myself. I’m going to be completely straight with them, and I’m going to act as their advisor. If the deal I have is not the best deal they can get I’m going to let them know because that’s going to strengthen the relationship, even though I might lose this specific sale.” And I think that captures the difference between the “me first” and the “let’s all do well” attitude that I’m getting at.

How would we cultivate compassion if we’re just not feeling it?

Neuroscientists have been studying compassion recently, and places like Stanford, Yale, Berkeley, and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, among others, have been testing methodologies for increasing compassion. Right now there’s a kind of a trend toward incorporating mindfulness into the workplace, and it turns out there’s data from the Max Planck Institute showing that enhancing mindfulness does have an effect in brain function, but that the circuitry that’s affected is not the circuitry for concern or compassion.  In other words, there’s no automatic boost in compassion from mindfulness alone.

Still, in the traditional methods of meditation that mindfulness in the workplace is based on, the two were always linked, so that you would practice mindfulness in a context in which you also cultivate compassion.

You and Your Team

Emotional Intelligence

Feelings matter at work

Stanford, for example, has developed a program incorporating secularized versions of methods that have originally come from religious practices. It involves a meditation in which you cultivate an attitude of loving kindness, or of concern, or of compassion, toward people. First you do this for yourself. Then for people you love. And then for people you just know. And finally for everyone. And this has the effect of priming the circuitry responsible for compassion within the brain, so that you are more inclined to act that way when the opportunity arises.

You’ve remarked that the Dalai Lama is a very distinctive kind of leader. Is there something we could learn from his unique form of leadership, as leaders ourselves?

Observing him over the years, and then doing this book for which I interviewed him extensively, and of course being immersed in leadership literature myself, three things struck me.

One is that he’s not beholden to any organization at all. He’s not in any business. He’s not a party leader. He’s a citizen of the world at large. And this has freed him to tackle the largest problems we face. I think that to the extent that a leader is beholden to a particular organization or outcome, that creates a kind of myopia of what’s possible and what matters; focus narrows to the next quarter’s results or the next election. He’s way beyond that. He thinks in terms of generations and of what’s best for humanity as a whole. Because his vision is so expansive, he can take on the largest challenges, rather than small, narrowly defined ones.

So I think there’s a lesson here for all of us, which is to ask ourselves if there is something that limits our vision — that limits our capacity to care? And is there a way to enlarge it?

The second is that he gathers information from everywhere.  He meets with heads of state and he meets with beggars. He’s getting information from people at every level of society worldwide. This casting a large net lets him understand situations in a very deep way, and he can analyze them in many different ways and come up with solutions that aren’t confined by anyone. And I think that’s another lesson everyday leaders can take from him.

And the third would be the scope of his compassion, which I think is an ideal that we could strive for: it’s pretty unlimited— he seems to care about everybody, and the world at large.

You’ve called the book a call to action. What do you hope people will do after reading it?

The book is a call to action, but it is a very reasoned call to action. The Dalai Lama is a great believer in a deep analysis of problems and letting solutions come from that analysis. And then he is also passionate about people acting now. Not feeling passive, not feeling helpless, not feeling, “What’s the point; I won’t live to see the benefit” but rather to start changes now even if the change won’t come to fruition until future generations.

And so my hope, as is his, is to help people understand what they can do in the face of problems that are so vast— creating a more inclusive economy; making work meaningful; doing good and not just well; cleaning up injustice and unfairness, corruption and collusion in society, whether in business, politics or religion; helping the environment heal; the hope that one day conflict will be settled by dialogue rather than war.

These are very big issues. But everyone can do something to move things in the right direction, even if it’s just reaching across the divide and becoming friendly with someone who belongs to some other group. That actually has a very powerful end result: that is, if you have two groups somewhere in the world that have deep enmity toward each other, and yet a few people in each group like each other it turns out that’s because they’ve had personal contact — they have a friend in that other group. So something as simple as reaching out across a divide is actually a profound thing.

In each of these areas, with whatever leverage we have, the point is to use it, not just to stand back.

3 Dec 2017 Our Sacred House (drawing), Trevince House (My Beautiful Things) and A Prayer When I Feel Lonely (Rachel Wojo)

Hello to you.  How are you?  It’s Sunday morning here and I am slowly waking up.  It’s one of those mornings where it was warmer in bed but my lower back was starting to hurt and I couldn’t go back to sleep so I knew it was time to get up!  My goal today is to continue working on writing up notes in Christmas cards so I can more of them in the mail tomorrow.   I was going to do a Christmas letter and decided against it.  Kyle was joking that I should write “Have a nice summer” in the cards.   I told him that wasn’t very  nice LOL!  Remember the school yearbooks?  Getting that written in your book was kind of like them saying, “I don’t know who you are but hey, have a nice summer!”    I won’t be writing that in my notes to people lol!

So I was looking at posts of folks I follow here on WordPress and got a nice synchronicity sort of thing.  My friend Sally from My Beautiful Things had shared some pictures from their visit to Trevince House and in looking at the second picture she shared, I realized it looked a lot like a drawing I did yesterday afternoon!

2 Dec 2017 240 pm Jackie Wygant outdoor chalk drawing our sacred house Alvarado TX

When I drew this all sorts of thoughts were going through my head!  The title I came up with, “Our Sacred House” coincides very well with Sally’s picture I think!

My Beautiful Things

Photo #2 From My Beautiful Things blog post about Sally’s visiting Trevince House. (Trevince sits proudly atop a hill overlooking St Wennappa’s Church in the parish of Gwennap, Cornwall)

I was curious about where she was talking about and found the official web site for Trevince House:

http://www.trevince.co.uk/
Trevince sits proudly atop a hill overlooking St Wennappa’s Church in the parish of Gwennap, Cornwall. With roots in the 13th century, Trevince has experienced many architectural changes, from a lost medieval house, to a modest Elizabethan country farmhouse, to a grand redevelopment by the famed Cornish architect Piers St. Aubyn in 1865.

Set in two hundred and seventy acres of farm and woodland, Trevince is adjacent to the renowned ‘richest square mile in the world’, a term coined in the nineteenth century when the area was rich in copper. The importance of Trevince as part of the social history of copper mining led to it being included in the World Heritage Site.

With its granite ashlar and pink killas stone, and classical portico entrance, Trevince has a beauty of its own. It has been in the same family since before 1281, and had never been open to the public until it hosted its first event at Christmas 2016; A COUNTRY HOUSE CHRISTMAS was a unique retail event and pop-up café to which thousands of shoppers eager for a new experience visited during the double-week end event.

The Trevince Team has now announced the dates for the 2017 event. So please join us on 24, 25, 26 November and 1, 2, 3 December for an exquisite Christmas shopping experience. Keep an eye on our news pages for more information.

I hope this finds you well and if not, I hope you know you are not alone in this world.  No one is ever truly alone.  It may seem like it sometimes but just because there isn’t another person around, that doesn’t mean no one is there.   The holiday season isn’t always so jolly for many people.   I was looking for a message to share to help anyone who might need help with this feeling of being alone today and found Rachel Wojo’s message.   I would ask you to get beyond this being a prayer, the words Father and Jesus, if Christianity offends you.  Try to read this prayer with your heart and not with your head.

A Prayer When I Feel Lonely

Yesterday on the Facebook page, we took prayer requests. One of our precious readers, Joeann, lost her husband two years ago and she is feeling so lonely.  There have been times in my life when I felt deep feelings of loneliness and my heart aches for Joeann. I was thinking about her during my run today. We’re all praying for you, Joeann! May this prayer provide comfort to her and to you.

A Prayer When I Feel Lonely

Thank you for listening to my heart;

Your patience with me is to be praised.

Today I had that feeling again-

The one where I feel so alone.

It seems that no one understands…

Even my family and friends don’t “get” me at times.

Though I can be in a room full of people,

I feel lonely…

And I feel alone.

I know You said You would never leave me.

Your Word promises this and it’s true.

These feelings are but signs of my human form.

Would You reveal Yourself to me

In a way far beyond my imagination?

Thank you for the peace beyond my comprehension

That can only be provided by You.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

when you feel lonely

Be blessed!

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+7&version=NIVthis Chapter is resonate with my thoughts this morning and for most of this year.  We will never heal as a nation or as a world if we continue to take joy in others sufferings.

Matthew 7New International Version (NIV)

Judging Others

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

“Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

Ask, Seek, Knock

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! 12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

The Narrow and Wide Gates

13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

True and False Prophets

15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

True and False Disciples

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

The Wise and Foolish Builders

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

1 Dec 2017 Morning Meditation

Hello to you. How are you doing in your present moment as you visit here? I hope you are less conflicted inside than I am! I am excited about seeing Lindsey Stirling tonight and sad with the news that our neighbors sister died yesterday after not recovering from complications due to an automobile accident! Rhonda was apt to remind me there are pills for my being happy and sad at the same time. I reminded her I’m taking some of those and it’s not helping with my predicament today!

There are more than a few things just popping some pill or another won’t provide any sort of consolation for. Coping with mixed emotions is an inside job to tackle with the God of your understanding if you have one or spending time in prayer, meditation, a long walk….for some to even smoke some weed! It’s important to allow ourselves to feel emotions and not just use people, places and things to obstruct or mask the experience. We are human beings and having feelings is part of being human!

Had an early morning wake up, like 1:38 am or so. It was like someone was standing right next to my side of the bed with a cup of prepared coffee! The mystery kind of got solved when I let the dogs out later and smelled the same sort of smell outside. Must have got into the house via our HVAC system or something.

So this morning’s meditation included my cards and a map of the United States I got from the Sierra Club many years ago. The messages spoke to me but also seemed to speak to what I see is happening these days in our country…in our world. I want to stress cards of any kind and there are millions of different types people use, are just tools. Sometimes I feel like my chalk drawings are too ambiguous and vague. Adding the cards lately is helping things get more specific.

It’s important to not read too much into such things..the phrase “self-fulfilling prophecy” comes to mind. There is always a fork in the road and we can choose, at any moment, which road to take.

1 Dec 2017 – overall reading

1 Dec 2017 – closer look at the cards ad their positions. The direction, facing up or down, changes the overall meaning.

8 of Cups face up- Tells you you will get what you’ve hoped for, but you may be being over-cautious

8 of Swords face down – Warns of unexpected calamities

Knight of Cups face up- Most often represents a lover, or the messenger of true love

8 of Wands face up – This is a time to take action, to be hopeful, to plan your next moves.

2 of Wands face down – Portends something unexpected will happen or enter the picture, or loss or failure in your new enterprise

Ace of Swords face up – Represents triumph by force

3 of Wands face up – Problems can be resolved if the person remains calm, dignified, intelligent

The World face down – Symbolizes complete mastery and understanding of your own inner nature and of the forces surrounding you

3 of Swords face up – Indicates the disintegration of alliances

6 of Swords face down – Indicates a journey, or visitor or message

Special: 5 of Wands face up – Signifies Greed, competition for financial gain, hardship

1 Dec 2017 – the “special” card today speaks directly to America.

The drawings that came up, especially the one with Vladimir Putin dressed in the colors of our flag, political parties and surrounded in “Cheeto Orange” comes with messages that resonated with me with the recent indictment of Michael Flynn. The messages, “They all play in this game” and “Takes many sheep to make a lamb” were what came forth after the poor drawing of Putin. In my perception, it’s not fair to just go after one person when so many are probably involved with this whole thing.  I think it’s important for transparency in this whole issue and to focus on how to make these wrongs right instead of just tearing more people and this country apart.   Sometimes looking at or hearing the news headlines in this country seems like what it may have been for the Romans in their Colosseums!  Just watching people being shredded alive!  Only in our day an age it isn’t flesh being ripped apart by lions, it’s their characters…their very souls.

1 Dec 2017 – this poor rendering of Vladimir Putin dressed in red white blue and surrounded by Cheeto orange and the messages that came are about how it seems a lamb is chosen to take the fall for everyone and no one ultimately benefits from this. Everyone involved should be held in account!

1 Dec 2017 – my dream has always been a unified earth. Enemies we all share Greed Hate and Fear, Fear being the worst in my feeling. This is me ruminating about the plethora of sexual misconduct allegations we are seeing that are destroying people’s lives. We have to be careful about this tactic.

The other messages pertains to what is going on with people, mostly men, being ripped apart and their legacies laid waste with sexual misconduct allegations. It came to me, as someone who has experienced sexual misconduct many times in my life, that bringing such things to light out of a heartspace of spite does no one any good. It’s just pouring more gasoline on a fire. We don’t heal as a nation and a people by attacking each other out of spite and vengeance.

Michael Flynn Pleads Guilty to Lying to FBI in Russia Probe

WASHINGTON — Michael Flynn, President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser, plead guilty to one count to lying to the FBI as part of an agreement reached with Special Counsel Robert Mueller in his probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Mueller charged Flynn with “willfully and knowingly” making false statements to the FBI regarding his conversations with Russia’s ambassador, Sergey Kislyak.

I told Kyle this morning that in a way, despite how ugly this whole year has been in this country, I am becoming almost grateful for it.  I am seeing it has been the sort of humbling experience this country has needed for a very long time.  We can learn from what is happening in this literal and figurative dismantling of America.  We can come together as a nation and instead of rebuilding other countries as we’ve done in the past after wars….begin to rebuild ours in peaceful cooperation with the rest of this world.

1 Dec 2017 – this was the last drawing and looking at it after talking to our neighbor about the tragic loss of his sister makes me wonder if this was for her.

28 Nov 2017 The backhanded compliment or asteism

Source is internet: When I saw what happened at the White House, I thought of Legendary Navajo Code Talker Joe Kellwood who walked on at age 95 last year.

Hello to you. How are you doing in your today? I’m doing pretty good just reallllllyyyy sore lol! We did the tree trimming yesterday in the front and back yard and then there was the dismembering of the severed limbs without a mulcher!  I really wish our town had a lending closet for things like mulchers and other mechanisms you need to maintain a house but only need like once a year. Anyhew…..the trees look much better. I noticed that there were limbs we took from the Pecan that had suspicious white patches that weren’t just bird poop on them. Hopefully she’ll be healthier for the trimming. I think we did a better job than the people we had hired a couple of years ago who did just about nothing and too $300 from us!

The dream realm was much quieter last night. The only one I slightly remember had to do with London making room for India.

The topic today, the backhanded compliment, comes from me seeing people in highly visible places seemingly trying to do something nice and then in the midst of doing that, throw out an ill-timed racial slur or insult. I’ve noticed this happening on a repeated occasions for one person in particular and it’s really rather sad.  It is a recurring event and the people that are supposed to be helping prevent such faux pas are failing miserably.  More distractions from that Russian probe, the FCC net neutrality repeal and tax bill they are trying to work on.   Kyle’s visual for this sort of thing is using a kitchen plate and holding it in front of a raised middle finger and saying….”look at the plate.”

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/onpolitics/2017/11/27/trump-calls-elizabeth-warren-pocahontas-while-hosting-native-american-war-heroes-event/898815001/ – “President Trump couldn’t resist using his old nickname for Sen. Elizabeth Warren – “Pocahontas” – even at an event honoring Native American war heroes.”

This said, I have been guilty through the course of my life of the backhanded compliment or asteism (new word I learned today).  So what exactly is a backhanded compliment?

A backhanded compliment, also known as a left-handed compliment or asteism, is an insult that is disguised as a compliment. Sometimes, a backhanded compliment may be inadvertent. However, the term usually connotes an intent to belittle or condescend.

I didn’t know what an asteism was. When I tried to find out what it meant, I kept getting the word asterism which is a cluster of stars in the night sky – which is far from an insult lol!

Noun[edit]

asteism (plural asteisms)

Polite irony; a genteel and ingenious manner of deriding another.

Here is an article I found with some really great examples:

Backhanded Compliments That Actually Don’t Flatter Anyone

June 10, 2014 by Ella

“Ella actually wrote a good article.”

Perfect example of a backhanded compliment! Anything with “actually” in the sentence is, actually, instantly less flattering. And don’t even get me started with so-called compliments that end with, “for a (insert an offensive noun—i.e., girl, guy, any and every race)”.

I asked my friends for the worst compliments they’ve ever received. I’m going to break this down into a few categories: race, sex (gender and more), heavy topics, appearance, and intelligence. These are my personal favorites, even though these comments are anything but favorable.

Race:

“You have nice hair for a black girl.”

“You’re really cute for a dark-skinned/black girl.”

But really, this applies for any and every race. As someone who’s Filipino, I constantly have gotten: “You’re really cute for an Asian.” and, “You have really big eyes for an Asian.”

The “for a (insert an offensive noun)” seems to go hand-in-hand with race.

Oh, and if you’re even remotely “exotic-/foreign-” looking, “You look like a Kardashian.” (Since when were they their own ethnicity?)

Sex (gender and then some):

“I like you because I’m not intimidated by you. Well, not that I think men should be intimidated by women anyway.”

“Out of all my friends with whom I could have said I had the worst sex in the world last night, I’m glad it was you.”

“You don’t look like that much of a boy with your hair that short.”

Heavy Topics:

“The extra curve actually works on you.” (in regards to the Freshmen 15)

“I’m glad you’re not one of those girls that thinks she needs to lose weight. You don’t want to be skinny anyway.”

“You’re really pretty for a big girl.”

“You’re the whole package! You’re funny, talented, smart… I mean, if you were only skinnier you’d be absolutely perfect.”

“You’re not like obese, you’re like… skinny-fat.”

“This dress is way too big on me, so I think it will look really great on you!”

“You can dance really well for a fat girl.”

“Wow, you really get pretty when you lose weight!”

“Hey, let me know if you ever want help losing weight!” (Note that her father said this to her.)

“You’d look healthier if you lost 20 pounds.”

Appearance beyond weight (no pun intended):

“You should dye your hair brunette. Your blonde hair really doesn’t make you look as intelligent as you actually are.”

“Well, you look really pretty when you put on some mascara and dress nice…”

On Tinder a woman displayed her multiple hair colors and one guy asked, “What color is your hair now?” She said blonde, and he responded, “Well if you were my gf maybe for my birthday you could die it brunette, it looked super sexy. (sic)” He got blocked after the spelling and creepiness. Conversely, she also had a boyfriend try to convince her to dye her hair platinum.

“You’re much better looking in person than in pictures.”

“You grew into your head.”

“You got prettier in college.”

“Your hair looks way better straight!” (to a person with naturally curly hair)

“This isn’t really yours, is it? Thank God you blossomed…you should get your picture retaken.” (said by a cop about my friend’s ID on her birthday)

“You’re still pretty even though you have a big nose.”

“It must be so nice to have such small boobs.” (Spoiler: it forever makes you unable to be the “hot” girl; you’re always the “cute” one.)

“You kind of look like you’re 13. But that’ll come in handy when you’re old!”

Intelligence:

“You’re very detail-oriented but since you have issues with flexibility you’ll need a job where you basically do the same thing every day.”

“You’re a lot smarter than I thought!” (said to a sorority woman)

“You’re so cool. If you looked like (insert random girl’s name) you would be perfect!”

“It must be great to be an only child. You’re so used to being alone.”

“I wish I could be more like you and not have any feelings.”

“You’re so much nicer and smarter than what people say about you.”

“You’re talented? But you’re in a sorority!”

OK, granted, no one intends to give a backhanded compliment—at least I can only hope not. However, I couldn’t help but notice how much more backhanded compliments were related to weight and intelligence.

Perception is everything. We perceive things without even realizing we’re perceiving them. For instance: When you first see someone, naturally the first thing you perceive is their gender. It’s no wonder that gender was a common theme as well.

I’ll admit, these backhanded compliments, while anything but flattering, are pretty funny from an outside perspective. But it made me realize something. (Wait, a sorority girl who actually thinks?! Sorry, I had to go there): How easy it is to come off ignorant and stereotypical. This especially hit home when I thought about the race comments. As someone who has been called a “cute Asian,” here’s a thought: can I just be a cute person? Just a thought! And the weight comments being one of the most popular themes, next to intelligence… I’m sorry, but why is being skinny, and especially being intelligent something of such a rarity that it’s worth commenting on?

I just can’t help but think that the people who are saying these backhanded compliments are the ones who we should be more concerned with… not the people who are receiving the backhanded compliments.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m fortunate for any compliment that comes my way. But for future reference, if you’re going to say a compliment, let’s make sure to articulate and tailor it in a way that’s actually flattering. (Oops, there it is again, the “actually” comment.

Well, I might be one of the biggest hypocrites… but at least I’m smart enough to write for Literally, Darling!

25 Nov 2017 Reincarnation (dream), Mosque attack, Mysterious Booms and TransCanada major oil spill in Amherst South Dakota

Hello to you. It’s 6:50 am on this Saturday morning as I begin to write to you. I did a scan of the headlines and regretted it. My prayers go out to those affected by the attack on a Mosque in Egypt….death toll of like 300 plus right now. So sad! Another example, like the Sutherland TX shooting, even houses of worship aren’t off-limits to murderous intentions, revenge and hate. So tired of this crap!

http://time.com/5036386/egypt-mosque-attack/305 Killed in Egypt Mosque Attack State, Media Says – “(ISMAILIA, Egypt) — Egypt on Saturday said an attack on a mosque by militants in the country’s troubled region of northern Sinai has killed 305 worshippers, including 27 children, a dramatic increase in the death toll previously announced, which was 235.”

So I had a really strange dream. It was about a meeting. I was meeting someone but they weren’t fully ready yet….something about reincarnation. I remember telling someone this was my 3rd incarnation, may be my fourth. There was something about figures being stored in a box much like action figures would be. Ashes associated with these figures were stored in a separate, sometimes hidden place. I remember seeing small wooden boxes and a sliding wooden floor. There was a meeting but the man I ended up meeting wasn’t the one I was waiting for. He’s the one who told me the one I was waiting for wasn’t ready. There was a small blonde man with a pair of sewing scissors who threatened to gut me like a fish using the scissors. He was holding them near my nose and was going to cut but someone stopped him and then I woke up.

I can’t even begin to put together all the keys that unlocked this one – my dream factory just putting thoughts I’ve had and media I’ve either read or watched to a script!

In my look at the headlines I saw this about Mysterious Booms :

Mysterious Booms Are Being Recorded Across the Country

Video by CBS News

Loud booming noises have startled people across the United States, but it’s not clear what actually is happening or if the separate events are even related.

Residents in a number of states—Alabama, California, Idaho, Michigan and New Jersey—have reported hearing similar, mysterious sounds. Most recently, the noises also were heard in Colorado, CBS Denver reports.

The Monday sounds left CBS Denver’s meteorologist Chris Spears baffled. The only possible explanation Spears could conclude was that meteors from the Leonid meteor shower were bursting in the sky, creating the loud noises. However, Ron Hranac, an astronomy expert, struck down his theory saying that the meteors produced by the Leonids are way too small for this to happen, according to CBS Denver.

A day after the explosion-like noises, officials believed they had a better answer of what happened on Monday night, but they still aren’t certain.

An empty oil storage tank over-pressurized near the region where residents were calling in about the boom, Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) officials told The Denver Channel. Due to the pressure, the lid was blown from the tank, “potentially resulting in a loud noise,” officials explained.

Following the incident, the oil and gas production company went on to file an accident report, which stated “that a malfunction of a production vessel led to an over-pressurization of a new and empty … storage tank, which resulted in the lid of the tank being compromised,” The Denver Post reports.

Furthermore, the report notes that no one was hurt and there were no environmental impacts or property damage outside of the boundaries of their property. The COGCC is now looking into the event to further understand what happened.

“The wells at the site will be closed in until equipment repairs have been made and a more thorough review of the incident has been completed,” the report said, according to The Denver Post.

Although the cause of the Colorado noises may have been discovered, other noises from across the country remain a mystery. A recent boom heard in Alabama left the National Weather Service in Birmingham taking many guesses as to what happened.

“Re: loud boom heard: we do not see anything indicating large fire/smoke on radar or satellite; nothing on USGS indicating an earthquake,” the agency wrote on Twitter. “We don’t have an answer, and can only hypothesize with you. 1) sonic boom from aircraft; 2) meteorite w/ current Leonid shower?”

However, the November 14 incident has still yet to be solved.

It makes sense that the boom in Colorado was just a lid popping off of an over pressurized tank but what about the booms being heard elsewhere. What do I think? I think it could be our “house”, the earth is shifting. I know when our little house shifts and adjusts to changes in water levels in the soil or extreme heat or cold we start hearing loud pops and booms in our house. I wonder if the same thing is going on with the earth on a global scale?

This is plausible if you consider all the natural and destructive activities that are going on all over the globe beneath the surface of the Earth’s “skin” and in the various waterways. There are nuclear bombs being tested, fracking, oil drilling, mining and any number of other activities all of which would I would believe could cause the “floor” of our earth to shift. These shifts may not always cause earthquakes at least not right away. If it’s like in our house, it may sound like it’s happening over head but it’s just an echo of sound coming from the ground. I’m not a geologist or seismologist etc. but that’s just what comes to mind about this. Or….it’s the second coming or aliens. Yeah lol. We shall see.

TransCanada recovers 44,400 gallons of oil from Keystone pipeline spill site

(Reuters) – TransCanada Corp said on Friday it has recovered 44,400 gallons, or 1,057 barrels, of oil from the Keystone pipeline spill site at Amherst, South Dakota.

An aerial view shows the darkened ground of an oil spill which shut down the Keystone pipeline between Canada and the United States, located in an agricultural area near Amherst, South Dakota. REUTERS/Dronebase

The company had shut down its 590,000 barrel-per-day Keystone pipeline, which links Alberta’s oil sands to U.S. refineries, on Nov. 16 after a 5,000-barrel spill. It has not yet set an expected restart date for the pipeline, which is one of Canada’s main crude export pipelines.

Additional excavation will be conducted beyond Sunday for soil remediation purposes, the Calgary-based company said, adding, it has about 170 personnel round-the-clock on the site engaged in clean-up activities.

Preliminary inspections of the damaged section will be completed on site by both TransCanada and U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) staff, then sent to Washington, D.C., for an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board’s Metallurgical Laboratory, the company said.

“As a safety precaution, TransCanada sampled one residential water well yesterday at a location about 1.5 miles from the site to alleviate any concerns — all test results were normal,” TransCanada added.

*ONLY one water well was tested?!!! They need to be testing ALL of them!  This is exactly the sort of stuff the DAPL water protectors were worried about happening.  It’s happening.  It’s like drawing blood with a faulty needle.  The oil we take from the earth is essentially the Earth’s blood.

20 Nov 2017 A sky of X’s and exploring shadows in art

Hello to you.  It’s 9:29 am on this Monday morning as I begin to write to you.  How is your present moment going?  Good I hope!  It’s really chilly here.  On the walk this morning I was pretty disappointed to look up and see airplane poop tracks all over the sky and more being put down as we walked.  Kyle and I have resigned ourselves to knowing it’s happening and not just here.  We are hoping our tax dollars aren’t paying for this sort of thing!  We certainly didn’t vote on or have a say in it happening.  It’s just happening and affects every living thing on this planet….especially the trees.  I’ve noticed for quite some time now that some of the trees in our yard, neighborhood and in the surrounding area seem to have compromised immune systems.   I don’t think it’s just from what they are getting exposed to above of course, but I’m sure it’s not helping.

I see scenery and outdoor pictures other people post that have the trails in them.  There was a scene in the BBC show The Living and the Dead that had them too.  They actually used the trails as a plot device to show the bleedover from the future into Colin Morgan’s characters present!  Most recently, I remember seeing a sky of the all too familiar “x’s”watching Stranger Things 2.  I see several other folks noticed it too.  This recording I found probably won’t stay long on You tube because of copyright and licensing stuff tied to sharing bootleg things from television shows and movies:

Chemtrails in stranger things 2.

The chalk drawings this morning were inspired by shadows.  Blame it on the “upside down” concept in Stranger Things 2 lol.  It’s kind of eery what happens when you look at something in the sun then draw the shadow whatever you are looking at casts beyond it.  I think that thought could go beyond just art but to so many other matters of our existence.  What we “see” isn’t all that is before us – people, places, things and situations.  They all have what we can see and it’s amazing what sunlight can do to illustrate what may not be readily visible.

For example, from *coughs uncomfortably,  my own experience.  Have you ever thought you swept your tile floor and then the sun comes through the window and shows you all that you missed?  Those glass shelves (don’t ever buy furniture made of metal with glass shelves it attracts dust like crazy) you literally just dusted are still incredibly dusty?!  The sun can show you just how inept your house keeping skills really are!  For me, the “suns judgement”  usually means it’s time to get on my hands and knees with a bucket of soapy water!

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Revelation 10:11–11:14 – this is the story of the Two Witnesses that I am referring to.  I know it’s probably “out there” to suggest the witnesses could be trees.  Just the thought that came to me doing this drawing:

Revelation 10:11-11:14New International Version (NIV)

11 Then I was told, “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, languages and kings.”

The Two Witnesses

11 I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers. But exclude the outer court; do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles. They will trample on the holy city for 42 months. And I will appoint my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.” They are “the two olive trees” and the two lampstands, and “they stand before the Lord of the earth.”[a] If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies. This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die. They have power to shut up the heavens so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying; and they have power to turn the waters into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.

Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the Abyss will attack them, and overpower and kill them. Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city—which is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt—where also their Lord was crucified. For three and a half days some from every people, tribe, language and nation will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial. 10 The inhabitants of the earth will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts, because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.

11 But after the three and a half days the breath[b] of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.” And they went up to heaven in a cloud, while their enemies looked on.

13 At that very hour there was a severe earthquake and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.

14 The second woe has passed; the third woe is coming soon.

10 Nov 2017 Sharing Blade Runner (film) with new generation (warning dream) and importance of working together in quest to find new source of energy for planet (drawing)

9 Nov 2017 Jackie Wygant outdoor chalk drawing Boo owl Sammy Alvarado TX 1

9 Nov 2017 – I drew this before we decided to watch Blade Runner. I had forgotten about the owl. When I drew this I was just thinking about the TY Boo owls Kyle had bought me. This is a miniature version of Sammy (I have large one also)

Hello to you. Last night we watched the original Blade Runner with Kyle’s youngest brother Cole. Cole had never seen the film before and is very interested in computer programming and gaming. He enjoyed it as did we. Ever since my ex introduced me to this film back in 1987, I’ve been watching it and have owned it in it’s various forms. Even when they had the movie on a Laser Disc the size of a record album!

The reason the film is so important to me is because of the questions it posed, that many years ago, about what our definition of what life is. What does it mean to be “alive” and what are the responsibilities of a creator for his or her creation if giving them animation includes the side effect of human consciousness….sentience….awareness. Conditions that have until recently only applied to “flesh and blood.” In light of Saudi Arabia recently giving citizenship to an AI, Sophia who is a robot, and the direction robotics are going….”more human than human”…becoming a burgeoning industry around the world. I think Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk and others who are asking for a “pause” button are justified in their concerns.

If you make “it”, are you prepared for what it means to be God? In case anyone has forgotten, God(s) get a lot of praise but they also get a lot of hate for the actions of their creation that intentionally or unintentionally do harm to others.

Remember the angry villagers with the tiki torches and pitchforks when Frankenstein ran amok?!

The dreams:

Dreamt about a young woman wanting to run away with a young man to London. He was writing a script/play. I could see it was already written. What was weird was when she was talking to him, it was like he wasn’t really there. While she was talking to him, she ran her hand across a dark blue carpet and asked him, “Are you there?” He looked like Blaine from the television show Glee. The parents were supportive of the girl because the boy was rich, or was going to be.

7:27 am (one that woke be up abruptly)

Dreamt there was a town guarded by robots that looked like cowboys. A man took a chance to walk past them because he thought they were just automatons. Kind of like the animated figures you would see at Disney in the It’s A Small World exhibit where they just move but are not aware…not alive. Just as the man got past them and was headed into darkness, one of the robot cowboys responded and shot the human man in the back and then turned and shot an old woman in the head who was preparing to do the same thing.

This dream correlates to the questions Blade Runner, Terminator, Robocop, the show Humans, West World….so many other movies and television shows. This is the risk we take to play God by taking AI and robotics to such a level.

The question Rachel, a highly developed Replicant asked a man who could “retire” her is very important to consider as it goes “both ways” should we decide to develop sentience robots and give them duties such as being police or soldiers (especially since we already know humans can make these same sorts of mistakes):

“Have you ever retired a human by mistake?” (Rachel) “No” (Deckard) “But in your position that is a risk.”

7 Nov 2017 This Little Light of Mine

Hello to you.  It’s a cold, gray Tuesday.  I’ve been out chalking some and my mind and heart are still processing Sutherland Springs and all the events that have happened like it before.  My heart just hurts about what is happening in our country.  Last night Kyle and I talked (I cried) about this as I was just pent up with so much pain.  People try to rationalize this by saying guns don’t kill people, a gun is just a tool.  Well Kyle narrowed it down to this.  Yes a gun is a tool but unlike a hammer that was created with the intention pounding nails…building things, a gun was always intended for the purpose of maiming, disarming and killing another living being.  The gun manufacturers have made sure that the latest and greatest versions are even more efficient at it….bump stocks etc.  I told Kyle I don’t understand how people, to include my own family, are just okay with this happening over and over and not willing to do anything about it!  How can anyone just be okay with this?!  And I’m crazy?!

I won’t belabor the point because my words are already in an echo chamber…..

My thoughts this morning went to my Grandpa and my Mom.  My Grandpa was a Pastor for many years and my Mother a “Pastor’s daughter.”  When I think of how much my Grandpa loved my Mom and what it did to him when she took her own life…with a gun at age 26.   I can only imagine the grief the pastor of the Sutherland First Baptist Church must be feeling at losing his daughter Annabelle at only age 14 at the hand of an angry young man’s gun.  I’m sure it is much the same.  My Grandpa never got over my Mom’s death.

My Mom Jeanne and my Grandpa Becker on her wedding day, 21 Nov 1965.

The first drawing I did was thinking about the keyhole to heaven and the phrase “suffer not the little children” came to me.   As I did the second drawing, the song “This Little Light of Mine” popped into my head.  I can imagine that Annabelle, the others who died with her and anyone who has had their life taken by another would not want us to simply mourn the tragedy of their being taken from us so violently.  I would think they would want us to turn on our inner lights even brighter….try even harder to make this world a better place for those who remain.  Let not their lives taken be taken in vain….be just another act of senseless violence.  This is easier said than done.  It is so hard not to let the lights go out going through such things as these.  It is so hard to avoid throwing up our hands at both the simplicity and the vast complexity of this whole issue.  My heart is with all those who are suffering right now.  There are no strangers here.

6 Nov 2017 Processing Sutherland Springs

I am processing the news yesterday about yet another mass shooting in America.  As many of us already knew – it wasn’t if it would happen again, it was when.  I realize people are capable of hurting or killing someone else with just about anything if they try hard enough.   Our Government has had ample opportunities to stem the access to the most deadly of tools one can use to take revenge on another, guns.  Time and time again they have done next to nothing….even made it easier for people like this latest shooter, a fellow USAF Veteran, to get access to them.   How many more lives are to be traded for profit from the manufacturing of guns and bullets?  I think it’s time, before the body count gets any higher, that the National Rifle Association needs to step up on this.

On November 5, 2017, a mass shooting took place at the First Baptist Church in the unincorporated community of Sutherland Springs, Texas, about 35 miles east of the city of San Antonio. Twenty-six people were killed and a further 20 were injured. It is the deadliest shooting in an American place of worship, surpassing the Charleston church shooting of 2015.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/11/06/us/texas-church-shooting/index.html – I was angry and in tears over this yesterday.  So angry this is happening again and again and the response for each time is about the same.  Next to nothing:  https://www.cbsnews.com/news/proposed-bans-on-bump-stocks-have-stalled-in-congress/Proposed bans on bump stocks have stalled in Congress

https://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/texas-church-shooting/trump-speaks-horribly-murderous-attack-texas-church-n817791 – he’s partially right on this.  People can use just about anything to maim, disable or kill someone if they want to bad enough.  Having “tools” like a gun, a tool specifically designed for maiming, disabling and or killing things around and easily accessible doesn’t help matters though.

Trump Says Texas Church Shooting ‘Isn’t a Guns Situation,’ Blames Mental Health

by Ali Vitali

TOKYO — President Donald Trump said Monday that Sunday’s mass shooting at a Texas church “isn’t a guns situation” but instead “a mental health problem at the highest level.”

Asked at a joint press briefing with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe if he would consider pressing for gun control measures in the wake of America’s second mass shooting in a month, Trump said “mental health is your problem here,” calling the shooter a “very deranged individual” with “a lot of problems over a long period of time.”

The U.S. Air Force confirmed Sunday that Devin P. Kelley, a former member of the USAF, was court-martialed in 2012 for assaulting his spouse and child and later discharged for bad conduct.

House OKs Bill Making It Tougher To Keep ‘Mentally Incompetent’ Vets From Buying Guns

The House has approved legislation that would make it harder to keep veterans who are “mentally incapacitated, deemed mentally incompetent” or prone to blackouts from buying guns. Critics of the bill say it could raise the suicide rate among veterans — a rate that has risen in the past decade.

At least a dozen Democrats joined Republicans to support the bill, which was approved by a 240-175 vote.

The legislation would add a new hurdle to the process of blocking a veteran whose mental competence is in question from owning a gun. While the Department of Veterans Affairs currently adds the names of veterans it deems unfit to own a deadly weapon to a federal background check system, the bill would require a court hearing before that determination is made.

“About 170,000 disabled veterans are deemed mentally incompetent by the VA,” NPR’s Quil Lawrence reports. “A VA-approved guardian makes some medical and financial decisions for them. Their names go on an FBI list so they can’t purchase guns — House Republicans sponsored the Veterans’ Second Amendment Protection Act to change that.”

Opponents of the bill say that easing gun ownership for mentally disabled veterans would make them a greater threat to themselves. As recently as 2014, an average of 20 veterans per day died from suicide, according to statistics released last year by the VA Suicide Prevention Program. Between 2001 and 2014, the VA said, the suicide rate among U.S. veterans rose by more than 32 percent.

Backers of the bill, such as Rep. Phil Roe, R-Tenn., the chair of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, say it would help veterans avoid being caught up in a bureaucracy that can make it tough to remove a negative label. Roe also cited the importance of “removing the stigma of mentally ill people — that because someone is mentally ill, they’re a danger to themselves or others.”

On the other side of the issue, Rep. Anthony Brown, D-Md., said, “When a determination is made that a veteran is mentally incompetent or incapacitated — for whatever reason — that determination is made to protect them, not to punish or deprive them.”

Critics of the bill include retired Gen. Peter Chiarelli, the former vice chief of staff of the U.S. Army. Speaking to Quil about why he opposed the bill, Chiarelli said, “Every single study you can read on this shows you that people in crisis — because suicide is such a spontaneous event — when they separate themselves from personal weapons the incidence of suicide goes down tremendously.”

The House legislation will now go to the Senate. It would change U.S. law by adding this section to sections governing veterans’ benefits:

Conditions for treatment of certain persons as adjudicated mentally incompetent for certain purposes

“In any case arising out of the administration by the Secretary of laws and benefits under this title, a person who is mentally incapacitated, deemed mentally incompetent, or experiencing an extended loss of consciousness shall not be considered adjudicated as a mental defective under subsection (d)(4) or (g)(4) of section 922 of title 18 without the order or finding of a judge, magistrate, or other judicial authority of competent jurisdiction that such person is a danger to himself or herself or others.”.

Matthew 5:39 – why does it seem like this part of the Bible doesn’t matter in this country?

New International Version
But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.

Love Your Enemies
38You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.’ 39But I tell you not to resist an evil person. If someone slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also; 40if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well;…

MEEEENOOOOOWWW!

Hello to you, it’s Saturday.  Queen May, our elderly cat queen has begun her morning demands for service so I will keep this short.  Just sharing some drawings/meditations from yesterday.  I’m starting to wonder if when I’m doing these drawings if my subconscious isn’t at work a bit.  The reason I say that is the last drawing of the day was a space ship and later we started watching the movie Kyle has pulled out, Guardians of the Galaxy (1).  I had forgotten we were going to watch it but may be my subconscious didn’t.  I’ve done drawings like that for many years.  I’ll draw something and then, seemingly at “random”, we will choose to watch a movie or some kind of media will come up that we will see that correlates.  I’ve never really understood this….I have to laugh when I say this….a sort of “t.v. guide?”  Who knows for sure.

As I continue to read Walden (not an easy read), I can see he was noticing and wondering about the structure and goings on of the people in this world in much the same way I do sometimes….he is just far more eloquent about it!  As you can tell by the drawings I’m sharing today, I’m trying to process things he wrote and what I think about those things both consciously and ultimately subconsciously.  Pretty profound stuff!

My Grandpa Becker – miss him almost every day.

I really started to notice this after my Grandpa Becker died .  I’ve kind of mentioned this  before in a previous blog.  I bought a spiral ring right after my Grandpa died and that symbol was something I would look for as a sort of guide: (https://saymber.com/2015/10/28/28-oct-2015-led-by-the-spiral-wednesday-keshe-foundation-livestream-broadcast/).

They keep turning to the answers readily before them versus taking a risk at becoming visionaries.  Leaders are put in charge to lead and part of that job involves asking the people they serve to consider making some drastic changes for the better of the collective.  I know most people in this country (world) don’t want to hear it,  but I’ll say it anyways.  We are all going to have give up a lot of things to build any sort of future….yep to include those gas guzzlers a lot of us still drive, large and small,  are going to have to go!  We need to start pushing towards converting and or repurposing any and all fossil fuel reliant vehicles or machinery.   Continued dependence and reliance on all things fossil fuel is not sustainable vision.

Climate change vs. responsible development at Senate ANWR hearing

Republicans are asking to permanently develop just a 2,000-acre footprint in the 1.5 million-acre 1002 area in the latest legislation as horizontal drilling and rigs with a longer reach combined with better 3D seismic data allowing for more targeted exploration have drastically shrunk the area needed to extract oil.

Cantwell, who has been a cross-aisle ally of Murkowski’s on other energy matters, noted the hearing was about prospective legislation that wasn’t yet before the committee, despite the fact a bill markup hearing is scheduled for next week.

“We’re here today because someone has come up with the ludicrous idea that we can pass a tax reform bill that raises the deficit, that increases our taxes and that will take a sliver out of a wildlife refuge to do it,” Cantwell sniped. “I almost want to call this ‘caribou for millionaires’ because it’s the most ridiculous idea I’ve heard as it relates to meeting the tax reform agenda.”
