This morning I saw a post on Ru Paul’s Facebook page that struck me like thunder! Ru introduced me to Jane Elliott. Jane has spent a great portion of her life digging at the core, the “why” of racism and division in our society like I have been wanting to see. She’s been at it a very long time! This was very educational for me. I’ve said and thought things she says racist people say even when they “mean well.” Things like, “I don’t see color, I think we are all the same.” I grew up in a very racist “system” but as an outcast myself, always had a heart for people different than myself. Even as much as I can empathize, I still have made mistakes and have been racist. I am grateful I joined the Air Force for this main reason…all the diversity of people having to come together and work toward common goals. I learned so much and have so much more to learn. We are never out of life school. I feel it’s my responsibility to share what I’m learning because I share life school with 7 billion plus other people who all are trying to learn how to coexist peacefully with each other too! I believe the crux of why we are having so many issues involving “labels” today is because we aren’t taught to empathize with people different than ourselves or to talk to each other in such a way so we can learn about how we are different and embrace those things…truly understand each other. We will never completely know what it is like to walk in another persons Private Optical Vehicle (POV) or body….but we can at least try!
Thank you for sharing this today Ru and thank you most of all to Jane!

Jane Elliott, internationally known teacher, lecturer, diversity trainer, and recipient of the National Mental Health Association Award for Excellence in Education, exposes prejudice and bigotry for what it is, an irrational class system based upon purely arbitrary factors. And if you think this does not apply to you. . . you are in for a rude awakening.
In response to the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. over thirty years ago, Jane Elliott devised the controversial and startling, “Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes” exercise. This, now famous, exercise labels participants as inferior or superior based solely upon the color of their eyes and exposes them to the experience of being a minority. Everyone who is exposed to Jane Elliott’s work, be it through a lecture, workshop, or video, is dramatically affected by it.
