14 May 2015 Man for Himself by Erich Fromm and message for today related to book

On the 8th of May, Kyle and I celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary and Link had his neuter operation.  I know, what a day to do such a thing but with time off rare for us these days, we decided it was when we should do it.  (Everything went great and he’s doing just fine – healed quickly!).

8 May 2015 – Link wearing his “cone of shame.”

While we waited for our boy to come out of surgery, we used the time to run errands and mix some treats, things we don’t normally do like having an espresso at Starbucks.  One of the places we needed to go was the Goodwill.  We have found this normally a great place to get Kyle’s work jeans.  For those of you who are welders or married to one, you know how quickly you can literally burn through a pair of jeans!  Sadly, they were cleaned out but we decided to see what other treasures we might find and mine was the book Man for Himself by Erich Fromm written in 1947.  This gem was mixed in with all sorts of other books ranging from old Textbooks to Encyclopedias etc.  As soon as I started skimming it I realized I had found a treasure and so far as I read it this feeling is valid!  Even back in 1947 when he wrote this, he saw what was going on in our society and how it was affecting human psychology and development.  Unfortunately, much of what he details hasn’t gone away…just manifested broader in scope and unfortunately in an even greater neurotic scale.

Some of the language/verbage is I want to say complicated but the truths rise up at you like a brilliant piece of sea glass revealed by the ocean tide.  Here is an excerpt that really illustrates my message today :  Pages 96 and 97

(b) Productive Love and Thinking

Human existence is characterized by the fact that man is alone and separated from the world; not being able to stand the separation, he is impelled to seek for relatedness and oneness.  There are many ways in which he can realize this need, but only one in which he, as a unique entity, remains intact; only one in which his own powers unfold in the very process of being related.  It is the paradox of human existence that man must simultaneously seek closeness and for independence; for oneness with others at the same time for the preservation of his uniqueness and particularity.  As we have shown, the answer to this paradox-and to the moral problem of man- is productiveness (In Chapter 3 Human Nature and Character, Part 2 Personality, he goes into great detail what productiveness means.)

One can be productively related to the world by acting and by comprehending.  Man produces things, and in the process of creation he exercises his powers over matter.  Man comprehends the world, mentally and emotionally, through love and through reason.  His power of reason enables him to penetrate through the surface and to grasp the essence of his object by getting into active relation with it.  His power of love enables him to break through the wall which separates him from another person and to comprehend him.  Although love and reason are only different forms of comprehending the world and although neither is possible without the other, they are expressions of different powers, that of emotion and that of thinking, and hence must be discussed separately.

*In light of all the past and ongoing sufferings being experienced in the world right now

Message:

Sometimes the only way to be whole is to be completely broken, helpless, powerless – shattered into millions of seemingly irretrievable pieces.  It is the collection of pieces, the best of parts of us and our possibilities that will make us the whole, without a hole, again.

As we rebuilt ourselves, we are the same on the outside but it is our new internal completeness that shines through what seems to be our sameness.

The process of retrieving the scattered shards of our past selves may initially involve external forces — *religion, God(s), spirituality, rehab, therapy, medication, support groups.  While they provide structure, order, comfort, release, safety, validation…the goal is beyond these tangible forces.  We can take a great many lessons, advice, truths, insights, from them but ultimately the path must lead inward to the core of ourselves – be able to love, forgive, soothe and comfort ourselves without external forces.  If we do not seek our internal force and make peace with its shadow and light, we will remain shackled (dependent) to external forces positive and destructive for the rest of our lives – never truly be liberated from our physical/emotional/spiritual pain.

It is for this reason most people remain prisoners in the cell of their and the external worlds design – they have the key to get out but are not able or willing to find it….they are afraid of self, taught not to trust self from birth to death.

Our human society model has always encouraged, fostered and rewarded the absence of self- awareness,  the realization of full individual potential.  The single most powerful tools – fear and scarcity.  The single most powerful tool perverted and repressed – love.  Love of self and love of others whatever their form.  The only profit in love is when it suites the means of those who tangibly profit – it is conditional.  How we look, what we think/say/feel/do, how much material wealth, how much control and power we have – all conditions to modern love.

Even love of the intangible – God(s) and divinity have been made conditional even if the literature and rhetoric – surface messages – would seem otherwise.  We are conditioned to be unworthy.  Like Janusin this image – the two face doll.  One side not the truth of the other (speaking out of both sides of the mouth).

Our world is “noisy” with our gadgets of distraction, our industry and “advancement.”  Where is self to be found in all this “distracting”, biased, purpose/motive driven noise?

When there is no “noise” most literally go nuts…most have no idea who self even is beyond the dogma of writ society!  When is there time?  We are conditioned to have (strive for/covet) a standard of living to which most of us will never realize at the expense of personal fulfillment – basking in the experience of living that fulfills…i.e connection to family, friends…our brothers and sisters human.  Connection with our brothers and sisters plant, animal, fish, insect, reptile.  All the matters of the intangible connecting all these threads – joy, hope, love, compassion, loyalty, commitment, exploration, discovery…all the things that the once shattered self needs to be whole…fill the hole.  The hole that is reserved for only the intangible – our true self.

*All of this I write from my personal experiences thus far.  It’s taken me 47 years to be truly “free” and finally start experiencing/living who I am, not what the world wants me to be.

7 May 2015 – In the beginning there was symbiosis

I typed my  notes today in case my scrawl is hard to read and added a bit at the end.  I apologize in advance for poor grammer, misspelling and incorrect punctuation – when info comes in I don’t really give a shit about these things..just get it down!

I am not a highly educated person, not a scientist, botanist, geologist…any kind of science field expert that has an “ist” at the end lol.  I think of myself as someone who see’s a bunch of unrelated things on a table and am able to make sense of them….I See.   Some may think I make perfect “nonsense” of these unrelated things but when I look at the progression, the path I’ve been going down with a free, open mind (have shared here many parts of this journey as well as other mediums like it) and I am pretty sure it’s far from nonsense.  I wanted truths and asked for them with a pure heart and gradually they are being revealed to me and I feel it’s my responsibility to at least try to pass them on to fellow awake, fellow seekers.

For the skeptical and dismissive reader I simply ask you to think for yourself and not rely on what you have been programmed to think, believe and do in this world.  You were given an individual body and with it a brain, eyes, limbs and senses in which to perceive the world, for YOURSELF….no one or no thing else.  It’s time to stop allowing the “brain”, “eyes”, “ears” and “limbs” of this world to control yours.

For the biblically inclined:

Many Members, One Body 1 Corinthians 12:12:
12For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.…

Flash:

They speak of God operating outside of time and that made me think of what I’m learning about plants and animal relationship and life-spans…(trigger also Richard Gordon latest workshop email this morning – video explaining “Youthing”).

What if plants determine non-botanical life spans based on the function of the animal in relationship to the plants purpose and life span.  Does this explain why both plucked fruits and fruit flies have very short life spans?  We have already discovered plant adaptation which affects insect adaptation..there “symbiosis”….vise versa….but primarily the plants adaptation/life cycle.  It is because of the plants the animals and insects have “energy” to exist – we ingest plants “emission” of oxygen and we ingest them and their life force energy collected and processed by them from the sun and earth.  We drink the water generated by the process of their emissions and the interaction of these emissions with our atmosphere—create clouds with water.

Lately, I’ve been looking at the elements of the Earth/Sky relationship – as Mother, Earth – as a huge human being. The process of plants ingestion and emission a massive scale representation of our own ingestion/emission process.  The trees look like our lungs, the leaves of tree and plants have veins.  The surface and layers of the earth have veins (crust=skin) like we do….”blood” like we do (gas, oil, water).  When the “veins” of the earth are punctured (damaged), and emptied, the “walls” (earthquakes, sink holes) collapse. *When we are pricked with needles we “shudder” in pain.  When oxygen, other fluid/material is put into the emptied veins (too quickly or too much) they respond like ours do – they expand, burst…bleed over into other organs…cause death.  We are seeing (and experiencing) with the increase of “puncture” activity (natural gas fracking, oil, mining, clear cutting) more and more earthquakes, land slides, volcanic eruptions, sink holes – all manifestations of what happens when the same things are done to us and all living beings.

The earth is using the same methods we use to try and heal itself and uses the plants processes to do it – our activities are making the earth have to go to extreme measures – hail = like our “exfoliating” methods to trap and clear toxins in the air.  Storms with wind/water to cleanse damaged surface “skin” – to reshape and form it. *is lightening like our brains electrical impulses – neural activity? Extreme temperature fluctuations like heat = fever, sickness in humans generates such fluctuations physically, energetically (emotional, spiritual).  Because we are removing plants and their symbiotic partners to make spaces for our species to live and operate vs that of what Native/Indigenous people/our early ancestors did by establishing societies and living in harmony and extensions of animal/insect/fish symbiosis.  They tried not to interrupt/destruct the natural balance.

Plants and their symbiotic partners live “outside time.”  When we do time lapse photography like Louie Schwartenberg does – only then do we see this concept of our human time.  I think plants and their original partners “time” is soley based on their function and purpose in the eco-sphere.   I wonder then if we evolved from plants and in the beginning for the function of symbiosis.  Because we had legs (limbs) we could move farther to plant seeds and had hands, mouths, respiratory/digestion systems to process and fertilize the seeds.  Our brains enabled us to learn and think on where to go to plant the seeds, when to plant the seeds and when to harvest the products (the grown plants and fruit of those seeds) and then ingest, process and make the process begin again.  In the beginning there was symbiosis between all living things and we were different because our “function” and “purpose” was to be the mediator, protector, co-creator with plants and their original symbiotic partners.

What happened?

I think we got too good at the human species “process” – birth, path to adulthood, procreation of ourselves with our own seed and earth (sperm and womb) and outpaced plants and their partners.  Our life cycle and process is “longer” in our concept of time because of our original function and purpose of being here at all (the only reason it’s longer than our ancestors is technology and science that extends our life span).

In our modern age we are all but completely in dissonance, disconnection from our original function and purpose and the state of our current world is manifestation of this.  More of us = requirements for more land to continue our process, which means modification and destruction of the places plants (botanical life) and their partners currently inhabit.  We have become so prolific we now compete with poisons, tools and weapons to conquer “space” for ourselves.  We are turning on each other consciously and unconsciously when the spaces plants and their partners are conquered….much like being discovered plants exhibit – between invasive and native species competition.

What seems to be the answer to heal ourselves is collectively to heal the earth – to find a way as a globe to return to symbiosis with what seems to be our beginning.

Instead of war and conquering the earth and each other, we must return to the beginning of the earth and ourselves……everything.  Then we will find the truth of time and space  – all we seek to stop suffering internal and external.

Einstein = “one stone”, stone is only a byproduct of soil.  Soil is a byproduct of decomposition.  Decomposition is a byproduct of organic matter (living matter dying).  Organic matter is a byproduct of the beginning…the One.

*What comes to me looking at current science is the answers are too simple, “easy”, unsavory and “off-putting” (ironically the truth serum of scientific theory must be illustrated with simple imagery that the common person can understand in order to be valid).  The truth is evident and has been evident  but it isn’t “enough” for the brains of science.  A long road for a short trip, “Need more scenery!  There must be more than this!”

Word pictures:

Process starts with the sun and it’s emanating rays of light energy that are received and processed by botanical life which then process this energy and emit what is needed to create oxygen, water and food. All living creatures serve the function of ensuring this process never ends…survival of all living things depends on the beginning process. The life span of all living things is determined by their relationship and function to plants.  As human beings we are extending our life span beyond our intended purpose through science and technology.  Because more of our species are living beyond their intended purpose we have imbalance in the eco-sphere – circle of life.  This is the part of the “why” of diseases like cancer and age related conditions…all disease really.  It’s natures way of trying to maintain balance.  The other part of the “why” is what we are having to do to plants and their partners to continue our current process as humans and what we are having to do is having severe consequences and ultimately may lead to extinction…the end of all life.

The truth of such things as the rapture, the end times is us.  The only way the end of all things is going to happen is if we, through what think, say and do MAKE it happen.
